Ill manors originally had a budget of £100,000 and in the box office it got £453,570 in the UK. It used a wide range of marketing to get it the publicity it needed to make the profit needed. Due to its budget being limited they couldn't use some of the big promotion platforms that some higher budgeted films use.

One of the ways in which the film was promoted and perhaps one of the most important was social media. Because of their low budget a free promotion platform like social media could have a huge impact on the money they take at the box office. It has a Twitter page and goes by the name of @iLLManors. It has 3,665 followers which shows just how many people want to know more about the film. In the information section it has links to Plan B's Twitter page and also to a website where you can download the film. It also has a Facebook page which has 31,626 likes. These figures show just how important social media is to films with a small budget. Social media being used to promote the film will only reach a selected audience so other ways were needed to be used.

Like many other films ill manors used posters. The image used was a promotional image. It shows the genre of the film and also shows one of the main characters. Also the fact that he is holding a gun it shows what a little of the storyline could be. Posters would be put up in a wide range of places from bus stops to cinemas. The poster was also the icon picture of both the Facebook page and the Twitter page as another way of promotion. Therefore the audience of the posters will be huge as not only does it include the audience of the social media sites but also other members of the public.

There was also a trailer made for the film. This would have been shown on many places including TV and the cinema. This would all meet a limited number of the target audience so websites like YouTube was also used. This is a world wide site and so far the official trailer has had 737,054 views. It includes real clips of the film which may also be an incentive for people to go and pay to watch the film. Also at the end there is the Facebook name and the Twitter name and also the web address of the official website.

The official website of the film includes the trailer, synopsis, information about Ben Drew or otherwise known as Plan B, image stills of the film, behind the seen videos and interviews, a link to buy the film, links to the Facebook and Twitter page, reviews of the film, the poster and also a link to the album. This can reach millions of people and therefor could have made millions of people watch the film. I think because of all that it holds as a website it looks a higher budgeted film so that in itself might make more people interested in watching the film.

Plan B or otherwise known as Ben Drew came up with the film. He is a well know artist in his own right so already has a huge fan base. Some of his songs feature in the film so his fans will watch the film. One of his music videos has some clips of the film in it and the songs were put on YouTube before the film so that was also a way of advertising the film. It also works in the reverse way, the film is a way to promote his songs.

Overall I think the way the film ill manors was very successful. The posters, trailers, website, album, Twitter page, Facebook page and clips on YouTube all reached different audiences but put together millions of people would have heard about the film which is one of the major ways that the money the box office gained was so high compared to the budget of the film.

The first shot used within the clip is a two shot of two women and with it there is a voice over of tone of the women. She is talking about her feelings towards the other woman therefor it is showing homosexuality within the clip. By doing this it helps the audience sympathise with her. By the clothing they are wearing we can see that the clip is set within the Victorian times and homosexuality was seen as wrong, even illegal, so again this fact also helps the audience to sympathise with her. When we first see the two women together one is holding a dress up to the other immediately showing that they are very close and have a lot of trust within each other.  Whilst the voiceover is still going on we then see one of he women reading and then looking up deep in thought. The fact that the voice over is still going on gives the impression to the audience that the woman constantly thinks about the other. The other woman has clearly one a lot her as she tells the audience during the voiceover, she even tells us that the other woman has brought her fathers books alive for her. 

The following scene happens whilst the voiceover is still going on. The woman is nearly stroking the other whilst laying in bed which again shows homosexuality within the clip. The fact that she doesn’t could be representative of the fact that she knows homosexuality during that time period is seen as wrong. Whilst the voiceover is speaking there is a slow and romantic piece of music playing in the background. Again this could be showing the time period as it is played with the violin which was very popular during the time period of which his clip is set. Also, it could be showing the romance and love which is felt between the two women.

The next scene is of the woman painting the other whilst she is sleeping with a man is watching them. The setting is in a field with the sun shining which in itself is seen as romantic but due to the man being there this view is broken. The woman painting tells the man to wake her in case she burns in the sun showing that she is worried for her wealth fair showing her compassion for her. The man replies with no showing that he does not feel the same way about her. We then see the woman stop painting and she starts to stare at the woman, paint then drops down from her paintbrush showing how distracted she is. The music picks up speed during this scene, sounds mysterious as when the paint is dripping down the man in the scene is starting to guess the relationship between the two women. The music also builds suspense as the audience knows that her being in a same sex relationship during that time period is wrong and the consequences for both the women can be very harsh. The man in the scene also speaks to the woman painting, who the audience now knows is called Mord, it becomes clear that she is painting to as time therefore she will have to spend less time with him before he leaves. Even though he says this to her she carries on painting showing how much she does not want to spend time with him instead she wants to spend it with the woman sleeping. When she realises that he has guessed that they are in a relationship together she gets up as if she is ready to run when he grabs her and puts his hand in front of her mouth.

We then see the mad drag her behind a tree and talks to her in a very aggressive manner. Whilst in conversation he says to her that the woman will laugh at her if she knew her true feelings towards her. She tells him he cant, the audience can see she is panicking because she knows that homosexuality is deemed as wrong.

He then tells her that if she wants to stay where she is then she has to pretend that she loves him by marrying him. The woman who was asleep then calls her name, due to her feelings for her Mord agrees to marry him as insurance that he will not ell anyone about their relationship, this again is another example of how people used to hide their sexuality in order to live their everyday lives.

The last scene of the clip starts of with seeing the woman getting undressed and getting into bed. Mord is then seen in the same bed looking worried as she knows that this can no longer happen due to her getting married and she has to get married otherwise the man will tell people that she is in a homosexual relationship which will be deemed as wrong within her society.

Ethnicity

Ethnicity is show in the clip in many different ways and within many different scenario. The stereotypes both followed and broken whist showing the variation of ethnicity within the scenes. 

The first scene of this clip consists of two men who are black. Although they have the same ethnicity they both have different mannerisms, figures of speech and clothing. The first man we see is wearing a suit. He speaks good English and clearly works there as he is seen to be giving something to someone. This view of him is against the stereotype of people who are of the ethnicity where as the second man who we see has dreadlocks, lots of jewellery on and is topless. he is seen walking out of the pool and therefore makes the audience feel like he is laid back. This, along with the way he speaks, fits the stereotype of this ethnicity. The second man uses words such as 'bro', 'man, 'you know what I mean' and 'blud' yet again this is something that fits with the stereotype of a man of this ethnicity along with the fact that he talks about having a party to meet lots of girls. The other man seems nervous around him and they way he speaks even though the other man seem so confident. I feel this is done to make the audience think that perhaps the the first man is worried that everyone will see him in the stereotypical way because of the fact that he knows the the second man. 

The second seen shows two cleaners who sound east European who later turn out to be strippers for a Chinese tourist. When someone sounds like they come from East Europe many people automatically assume that they have moved to England for a better paid job so the fact that they are cleaners and strippers (to gain more money)  fits into the stereotype of an East European living in England. The man they strip for is a Chinese tourist. The stereotype of a Chinese man away in England for a while is that they are businessmen and therefore wealthy. People think if someone is wealthy, such as a businessman, they are willing to give money for their own gain. 

The next major scene where ethnicity is shown is seen in the kitchen. The first two people shown are both English. They have more power within the work place than anyone else seen in the clip yet. They are wearing very mart clothes which fits the stereotype of English people being good businessmen and leaders. When they enter the kitchen the are greeted by a french cook. The audience know this due to his strong accent and the mannerisms, phrases and words that he uses. In many different forms of media French people are seen as very good cooks but are also shown as the boss within the kitchen. This leads to the next character who is an English cook. They end up fighting over who is in charge as both people are sterotypically demanding and due to this they are fighting to be head chief. They insult each other before the fight brakes out and the french cook uses phrases such as 'get on with your English slop' which could show how the French sterotypically see us within the cooking profession.  

Audiences of films

I do not often go to the cinema. I only go if there is a film I really want to see, I do not just go to the cinema and see what is being shown. This is because of the cost of tickets. Quite often the film on DVD is cheaper than a ticket to see it in a cinema. The reason I go to the cinema instead of waiting for the DVD is because of the big screen, loud volume and also the atmosphere of the cinema during the film. Many cinemas are having to think of new ways to screen a film because of the prices of the tickets to see the film compared to the cost of a DVD. Ways of seeing a film now includes 3D and iMAX. Tickets cost more but because they are exclusive to the cinema experience people are willing to pay. I sometimes go and see a film in 3D but it always depends on the price of the ticket. I go to the cinema with my friends as it is to expensive to go with family. Although there are offers for families there is not normally change out of £50 for a family of 4. With friends we all pay for our own ticket so the cost is less individually. Cinemas get most of their profit from food sold in stead of the tickets. When I go to the cinema the only thing I buy from them is popcorn as a way of trying to reduce the cost for me. Cinemas are also trying to get more people to come by introducing special offers, for example, Orange Wednesdays. This is exclusively for people who use the phone network Orange and allows them to get cut price cinema tickets on Wednesdays. This helps both the cinema and phone network gain more customers and therefore more profit.

Less people are going to the cinema even with their efforts because there are more ways to watch films. An example of this is websites such as Nexflix. People can now stream films from websites in the comfort of their own home and for much less money. Even websites such as these face problems like the illegal downloading of films. This allows people to watch films for free and has a huge negative affect on companies such as cinemas, production companies and the box office as they are losing money for the film even though people are still watching it. Many things have been put in place to try and stop this from going on but they have not been as successful as they had hoped. For example, they have made people more aware of the fact that downloading a film for free is illegal by adverts but people are not taking notice. I think as way to help stop this would be to lower the price to watch a film in the cinema as people who think the only way to way a film with their budget is to download or watch it illegally will be able to watch the film without breaking the law. Other ways people watch films which is illegal includes buying them off people who have filmed the film from the cinema screen. Patrols have been put in place to try and stop this.

DVD’s also have to keep up with the ever changing world of technology. In order to make the market for them more stable, better quality versions of DVD’s have been made. Blu-ray disks may be a little more expensive and so might the players needed to play them, they have so much more to offer the audience. I personally don’t own a Bul-ray player although my brother does on a game console. Due to me not watching many DVD’s I don’t see a point in spending more money on something I would not use much.

Films are still shown on TV like they always have on channels such as Film 4. Catch up TV has become ever more popular meaning that films on TV has as well as people know that if they do miss the film then they can watch it online for a limited number of days. This makes films on TV more popular even though many people are put off due to the fact that they have to be around the TV at that time to watch it, you cant pause it and there are adverts during the film.

The way films have been marketed over the years has also changed. For example posters and adverts on T V were often used, now websites such as YouTube and social network sites such as Facebook and twitter are also used as a advertising platform. This means that the amount and variation of people who will get to see that advertisement will increase and therefore so will the amount of people who see the film. This transcribes to more profit for the people and companies behind the film such as production companies. 

Doc Martin- Reginal idenity

The clip starts off with Doc Martin walking in and to of the villagers called All and Bert large are fixing the sink. Martin is wearing a suite like what you would expect from someone working in the city and All and Burt are wearing normal everyday clothes but over then they are wearing work clothes which is what you would expect from people living in the country side. The fact that All and Burt are father and son and they work together also links up to the stereotypical view of a village. When Martin walks in the camera is at low angle him and the plumbers that are fixing the sink. The doc is at the highest angle and then it is the man sitting down and then finally it is the youngest of all that is the lowest down the screen showing the status of them compared to each other. The easiest detail that gives us the impression that Martin isn’t from the village is that he is the only one who doesn’t have an accent. The room that are in looks small and the ceiling is not very high so overall it looks like an old cottage or house which you would find in an old traditional village. The fact that it is two of the villagers fixing the sink and not someone from outside the village who may have been better trained gives the impression that the village is very small as everybody knows everybody and they all help each other out when they need it. Also, in the first clip they are talking about what different words means because due to where he has come from Doc Martin does not understand. The stereotypical view of someone who lives out in the country is that they do not have a good education however All refers back to books that he has read and shows he knows a lot about them which gives the impression that he is well educated. Later on in this scene the sink breaks but the only one to rush to get it to stop is the Doc, everyone else is so laid back about it, which could relate to the atmosphere of the village. When this happens and he is shown in the shot the shot becomes unsteady but when is goes back to Burt in becomes steady again also showing that the Doc is the only one trying to stop the leak. At this point there is fast editing to show the high feelings of stress. The transitions between shot are plain highlighting the the fast pace of the scene. A dog comes running into the surgery whilst Martin is trying to stop water coming out one of the pipes which gives the impression to me that dogs can wonder around the village when and where they like as everybody knows them and the owner. It also shows that the village is quiet and small. No one tries to get the dog out other than Martin showing he is new to the village as he is the only one who is not use to the dog running in.

The next scene is the Doc taking the dog to the police station. A panning shot is used to show this and it also shows the people in to background which should suggest that it is a place that a lot of tourists go as the village appears busy. The streets are narrow and twisting with old brick cottages all round just like to stereotypical old village. We can hear and see seagulls and in the background we could also see some fishing nets being sold showing us that it is a seaside village. As he walks past people they all turn to look at him and smile giving the impression that everyone knows who he is even if he has never seen them before. This gives the impression that the village is a tight knit community so if anything happens, for example there being a new doctor, everyone knows. Him walking through the villages shown by a tracking shot which shows the pace at which he is walking and how it compare to the quiet village. He then walks into the police station where the policeman is hovering showing that the village is quiet and there is no crime going on as normally a policeman would be out patrolling the streets. The fact that he has a hover is highlighted when the camera starts off showing it and then it tilts up to show the policeman using it.  The policeman greets his with ‘Doc Martin, nice to meet you finally’ showing that everybody does know who he is but Martin has not gone to the trouble of meeting people in the village yet. 

The next character he meets is a woman who also knows who he is before he has introduced himself. The first shot used is a medium shot of the woman putting shopping into her car, it then changes to a two shot when Martin walks into the shot. The woman starts the conversation showing that people in the village all talk to each other but due to the doctor coming from a more urban setting is dose not do this, it again also backs up the statement that the village is a tight knit community. Once they are in conversation the lady hints at Martin prescribing her something without an appointment as the other doctor did showing that because the village was so small and everyone knows every ones business not everything was done the correct way. We then see him walking past a school where he can see the teacher, this could show the village being small as he can just look into the classroom without any walls or fences in the way. When we first see him walking past the school an establishing shot is used, this could be used to highlight the low security the school has. Also, it is showing that the school is an old brick building, just like the rest of the village. The next person he talks to is offloading fresh veg from the back of a pick up and then carrying them into a small shop. The veg shows that there is local farms which you would not get in the city which could show a better and healthier life in the country side as they are eating free veg. She is wearing dark clothes and they are practical for manual work unlike Martins clothes which could be why he looks so uncomfortable when she gives them to him.

disability essay

The first character we see is, as we later find out, called Billy. We see him walking along by himself by a dark forest but we can clearly see that he is disabled. This is a positive thing as it shows that his disability does not limit him in his independence as an adult. The camera is going along with him, he is always in the center of the screen which could show that he is one of the main characters.

The next scene shows him walking right in front of the police who have dogs and torches showing he might not be aware as an able bodied person is as they are obvious against the dark setting of a forest at night. When be becomes aware of the police being there he looks startled and this is shown by a close up. I think this shows disability as by his face he looks like he doesn't know what is going on and doesn't know what to do next.When the police see him he runs and the police chase him. The camera uses a tracking shot but it is uneven which could show how it is all in a rush and that Billy doesn't fully understand what is going on. When they catch him he tries to escape and we see him trying to roll away on the forest floor while the police man is trying to hold him down even though it is clear to the audience that he wont escape. I think this could also show disability. He then denies doing anything even before the policeman says anything showing that he doesn't fully understand what is going on.

The following scenes take place in his house. Frost asks Billy's father to go in with him when he is talking to Billy as he is disabled and might not know what is going on. Withing this short scene there are two words for disabled that is used, one is what Frost says which is 'mentally subnormal', to which the father answers 'you mean handy caped', this could show that this is not modern as we fully understand disability now and try not to exclude disabled people from our normal day lives and names like that are now deemed unsuitable for use. After this the camera follows them to the door where they are met by Billy's mother which is a three shot. She says that he will feel better once he is clean and she is holding a blow with a cloth in it showing that he is very reliant on her for things he does daily highlighting the extent of his disability.

When Frost and Billy's father go in to talk to Billy his father explains at eye level very slowly what is happening. Billy also gets spoken very slowly to by Frost so Billy will understand the questions which is also a sign of disability. The camera almost looks down on Billy making the audience feel that they know more than he does like someone does when they look down on someone else. The camera looks up at Frost showing that he has authority in the room, this is also shown when he is trying to look Billy in the eye. Once Billy answers Frost it is very clear when he isn't telling the truth because he looks at the floor showing that he doesn't have the same mental awareness than Frost. When he nods in the scene it is very over done which could show that he doesn't have much control over his body as Frost does. At the end when he says that he didn't see her he speaks clearer than what he has done throughout the clip and he also talks a little louder showing that he is beginning to panic, he repeated this which is showing that he is trying to persuade Frost even though it isn't  the truth as Frost has clearly explained that someone saw him with the missing person but Billy still thinks he can get away with lying.
