Doc Martin- Reginal idenity

The clip starts off with Doc Martin walking in and to of the villagers called All and Bert large are fixing the sink. Martin is wearing a suite like what you would expect from someone working in the city and All and Burt are wearing normal everyday clothes but over then they are wearing work clothes which is what you would expect from people living in the country side. The fact that All and Burt are father and son and they work together also links up to the stereotypical view of a village. When Martin walks in the camera is at low angle him and the plumbers that are fixing the sink. The doc is at the highest angle and then it is the man sitting down and then finally it is the youngest of all that is the lowest down the screen showing the status of them compared to each other. The easiest detail that gives us the impression that Martin isn’t from the village is that he is the only one who doesn’t have an accent. The room that are in looks small and the ceiling is not very high so overall it looks like an old cottage or house which you would find in an old traditional village. The fact that it is two of the villagers fixing the sink and not someone from outside the village who may have been better trained gives the impression that the village is very small as everybody knows everybody and they all help each other out when they need it. Also, in the first clip they are talking about what different words means because due to where he has come from Doc Martin does not understand. The stereotypical view of someone who lives out in the country is that they do not have a good education however All refers back to books that he has read and shows he knows a lot about them which gives the impression that he is well educated. Later on in this scene the sink breaks but the only one to rush to get it to stop is the Doc, everyone else is so laid back about it, which could relate to the atmosphere of the village. When this happens and he is shown in the shot the shot becomes unsteady but when is goes back to Burt in becomes steady again also showing that the Doc is the only one trying to stop the leak. At this point there is fast editing to show the high feelings of stress. The transitions between shot are plain highlighting the the fast pace of the scene. A dog comes running into the surgery whilst Martin is trying to stop water coming out one of the pipes which gives the impression to me that dogs can wonder around the village when and where they like as everybody knows them and the owner. It also shows that the village is quiet and small. No one tries to get the dog out other than Martin showing he is new to the village as he is the only one who is not use to the dog running in.

The next scene is the Doc taking the dog to the police station. A panning shot is used to show this and it also shows the people in to background which should suggest that it is a place that a lot of tourists go as the village appears busy. The streets are narrow and twisting with old brick cottages all round just like to stereotypical old village. We can hear and see seagulls and in the background we could also see some fishing nets being sold showing us that it is a seaside village. As he walks past people they all turn to look at him and smile giving the impression that everyone knows who he is even if he has never seen them before. This gives the impression that the village is a tight knit community so if anything happens, for example there being a new doctor, everyone knows. Him walking through the villages shown by a tracking shot which shows the pace at which he is walking and how it compare to the quiet village. He then walks into the police station where the policeman is hovering showing that the village is quiet and there is no crime going on as normally a policeman would be out patrolling the streets. The fact that he has a hover is highlighted when the camera starts off showing it and then it tilts up to show the policeman using it.  The policeman greets his with ‘Doc Martin, nice to meet you finally’ showing that everybody does know who he is but Martin has not gone to the trouble of meeting people in the village yet.

The next character he meets is a woman who also knows who he is before he has introduced himself. The first shot used is a medium shot of the woman putting shopping into her car, it then changes to a two shot when Martin walks into the shot. The woman starts the conversation showing that people in the village all talk to each other but due to the doctor coming from a more urban setting is dose not do this, it again also backs up the statement that the village is a tight knit community. Once they are in conversation the lady hints at Martin prescribing her something without an appointment as the other doctor did showing that because the village was so small and everyone knows every ones business not everything was done the correct way. We then see him walking past a school where he can see the teacher, this could show the village being small as he can just look into the classroom without any walls or fences in the way. When we first see him walking past the school an establishing shot is used, this could be used to highlight the low security the school has. Also, it is showing that the school is an old brick building, just like the rest of the village. The next person he talks to is offloading fresh veg from the back of a pick up and then carrying them into a small shop. The veg shows that there is local farms which you would not get in the city which could show a better and healthier life in the country side as they are eating free veg. She is wearing dark clothes and they are practical for manual work unlike Martins clothes which could be why he looks so uncomfortable when she gives them to him.

disability essay

The first character we see is, as we later find out, called Billy. We see him walking along by himself by a dark forest but we can clearly see that he is disabled. This is a positive thing as it shows that his disability does not limit him in his independence as an adult. The camera is going along with him, he is always in the center of the screen which could show that he is one of the main characters.

The next scene shows him walking right in front of the police who have dogs and torches showing he might not be aware as an able bodied person is as they are obvious against the dark setting of a forest at night. When be becomes aware of the police being there he looks startled and this is shown by a close up. I think this shows disability as by his face he looks like he doesn't know what is going on and doesn't know what to do next. When the police see him he runs and the police chase him. The camera uses a tracking shot but it is uneven which could show how it is all in a rush and that Billy doesn't fully understand what is going on. When they catch him he tries to escape and we see him trying to roll away on the forest floor while the police man is trying to hold him down even though it is clear to the audience that he wont escape. I think this could also show disability. He then denies doing anything even before the policeman says anything showing that he doesn't fully understand what is going on.

The following scenes take place in his house. Frost asks Billy's father to go in with him when he is talking to Billy as he is disabled and might not know what is going on. Withing this short scene there are two words for disabled that is used, one is what Frost says which is 'mentally subnormal', to which the father answers 'you mean handy caped', this could show that this is not modern as we fully understand disability now and try not to exclude disabled people from our normal day lives and names like that are now deemed unsuitable for use. After this the camera follows them to the door where they are met by Billy's mother which is a three shot. She says that he will feel better once he is clean and she is holding a blow with a cloth in it showing that he is very reliant on her for things he does daily highlighting the extent of his disability.

When Frost and Billy's father go in to talk to Billy his father explains at eye level very slowly what is happening. Billy also gets spoken very slowly to by Frost so Billy will understand the questions which is also a sign of disability. The camera almost looks down on Billy making the audience feel that they know more than he does like someone does when they look down on someone else. The camera looks up at Frost showing that he has authority in the room, this is also shown when he is trying to look Billy in the eye. Once Billy answers Frost it is very clear when he isn't telling the truth because he looks at the floor showing that he doesn't have the same mental awareness than Frost. When he nods in the scene it is very over done which could show that he doesn't have much control over his body as Frost does. At the end when he says that he didn't see her he speaks clearer than what he has done throughout the clip and he also talks a little louder showing that he is beginning to panic, he repeated this which is showing that he is trying to persuade Frost even though it isn't  the truth as Frost has clearly explained that someone saw him with the missing person but Billy still thinks he can get away with lying.

media essay- personal use of media

Media essay- personal use of media

I go to the cinema about once a month depending on what films have been realised and what feedback they have been given. Millions of people go to the cinema each year yet most of the cinemas get the majority of their profits not through ticket sales but through people buying food such as popcorn which they sell as it is estimated that is has a mark-up of 700%. Food and drink at the cinema can make up 85% of the cinemas I do buy popcorn sometimes when I go to the cinema but anything such as drinks I bring from home. To increase profits cinemas are now offering seats which moves with the film itself, the ticket price is higher than an average seat but due to the experience not being possible at home many people choose to have these seats. Personally I don’t because I feel like cinemas are expensive enough without adding more for a ticket especially when a normal ticket isn’t that much less than getting the DVD when it is first realised which I might get anyway. I normally go with my friends as it is quite often too expensive to go as a family as it can quite often go way above £50.

In our household we have 4 TVs which are all digital. The average household has between 3-5 TVs and often has more TVs than people in one house. On all of the TVs at home we can get around 50 TV channels as we have Freeview TV and we also get around 24 different digital radio stations. About 76% of UK households have Freeview o either their main or secondary TV set. In 2014 95% of households in the UK have a TV. On my personal TV I can get some TV channels where I can watch films such as Film 4 but not as many as people who have other TV providers. My TV and the lounge TV have an in built DVD player but the only person to have a Blu-ray player is my brother as he has a game console which can play them on. We do buy a lot of DVDs, me especially as I tend to watch them instead of TV, even f it is a DVD of a past TV programme. My brother does buy some Blu-ray disks but not many because he mostly plays video games on his TV. I don’t have a hard disk recorder like every other TV in the house but I do catch up by using catch up websites such as BBC iPlayer.

I have access to the Internet most of the time on many devices such as my phone, laptop, Wii and sometimes a tablet at both my mums and my dads house. Other members in my family use a netbook, their phones, tablets, the computer and other video game devices. In 2013 68.6% of Europe had the Internet, compared to North America, which had 84.9% that is considerably smaller. I’ll sometimes watch films on YouTube, catch up TV and Netflix on either my phone when I’m out, Wii if I want to watch it on my TV and also my laptop but not on my tablet as it doesn’t always load properly and the picture and sound quality is very poor. Websites like Netflix have a huge amount of subscribers; in 2013 29.2 million people here subscribed and in the same year made 3 million in profit. I do sometimes watch non-professional films on Vine or YouTube on my phone or laptop. YouTube is one of the biggest websites for people to upload their on films, in one month more than 1 billion people use it, 80% of the people who use it are in the US. I watch films with friends and family but I also sometimes watch them by myself. When I watch it with someone else its nice because the atmosphere of the film is shared between you just like it is in the cinema but on the other had its nice to watch a film by myself as it means I can really get into the film and the storyline. I do have a video camera but I only use it for special occasions, I use my video recorder on my phone more as I always have my phone on me even though the quality isn’t as good. I don’t upload videos on the internet as many of them are of family events which means that they are meaning less to anybody else and personal but many people do, in just on minute 3 days worth of videos are posted o YouTube.

Downton Abbey- Class and Status exam

Downton Abbey- Class and Status exam
The first thing we see in the clip is a boy riding a bike along a long grand driveway which leads up to a big house. Later on in the scene we find out that he is a paper boy and riding a bike is a very working class stereotypical thing to do. When he hands the paper to one of the butlers he is greeted with 'your late!' showing that although they are both working class the butler has higher status than he does. The clothes he is wearing also gives clues to his class. The camera uses panning at a slightly higher angle so the camera is looking down on the boy sightly. The smooth panning gives the effect that the boy is use to riding there everyday and is part of his normal routine.

The following scene is lady waking up in a huge room. There are pictures hanging on the wall showing that she is upper class. The colures in the room are very rich and ones that you would link to royalty. She looks out her window and looks down on the paper boy. This could show that she has higher status than he does. The camera shows what she sees,  feel that this also shows that she knows that she is higher status than he is.

Another scene where I feel shows a difference in class and status is when they are all in the kitchen in contrast to the lord going down the stairs. In the kitchen there are very quick shots that shows how busy everyone is. There is a man sitting a the top on the of the table showing he has status over everyone else. They are all either wearing butler suits or maids outfits showing that they are working class. One of them is sitting down eating when the bell rings and says 'here they go again' showing who ever that work for has higher status than all of them and they they has no time to themselves. When the scene starts there is an establishing shot to show that the scene is taking place in a kitchen showing straight away that they are working class people. When the bell rings there is a close up of it, this could represent that everyones lives evolves around the bell as it is calling them to do work. The music in the background is very fast and could represent how busy everyone is. We also see someone ironing a paper which we later find out is for the lord showing just how much status he has. This shot is followed by another that is a total contrast to it. It shows the lord slowly and gracefully walking down a grand stair case followed by a labrador. The stair case has gold on it showing his class. In addition, the fact that he is being followed by a labrador is significant to his class as they are hunting dogs so it could make the reader think that he hunts which is a higher class thing to do. At the beginning there is a painting of a man hunting, this could show that he got his class from relatives. He is also wearing very smart clothes. The shots are longer than the ones in the kitchen as is shows how peaceful and clam it is. The last shot shows him on the las couple of steps to show where he is, is shows him to be in a very grand hall. There are paintings on the walls and there are very rich colours in the scene. The music in the scene calms down from the first scene as well to show the contrast between the two scenes.

After the lord walks down the stair case he enters a large dining room. It has flowers in very rich colours and has silver plates laying on the side filed with food. There is a butler standing next to it and he remains standing throughout this scene. He calls him 'my lord' showing that he has less status than he does. The carpet is red which could also shows there class as it is a very rich colour. Two woman walk in and stand round the lord showing that he has more status then they do. When they start talking about the titanic sinking they talk about all the upper class people they know who where on the boat showing that they too are upper class as lower class wouldn't know the upper class that well. The women are wearing are wearing very rich looking clothes are a typical of that of upper class in that time that the TV programme is set. They sound very posh and their posture is always in line with the stereotypical views of people in that class. The editing is much slower and calmer to fit the feel of this scene, it is the opposite of the kitchen scene to show the differences between classes. The lord still has more power than the women as they call him papa.

The next scene shows him coming up the stairs and asking the maid if his wife it awake. They address each other in a very formal way. He is addressed as 'his lordship' and his wife is addressed as 'her ladyship' yet the maid is only addressed by her surname. It shows that he has more status than she has. The lord knocks yet doesn't wait for a reply to open the door, this shows that although he has respect for his wife he has more status as lord of the manner so he doesn't have to ask for peoples permission to enter any rooms where as the maid does. The maid brings breakfast to his wife in bed and takes more orders form her showing that his wife has more status and is higher class as she has her own personal maid. The bed her ladyship is laying in is very big and has rich coloured sheets and the room is covered in paintings. Again they talk about people they know on the titanic and who was saved.

To conclude I feel this clip shows class and status and the differences in the people due to this very well by using a range of editing, camera work, sound and miss-en-scene.

Representation of age

Evaluation
At the beginning it shows a student talking to a member of staff, I recognise that it is a student and teacher talking by many things such as what they are wearing. There is a student wearing school uniform and teacher wearing samara clothes. Another way i saw it was a school was the background, it looks like a school hall and there are other teachers and students behind them. The tone of voice of them I feel is also a give away that it is a school. The teachers voice has supremacy over the student which follows the stereotypical view of older people have supremacy over younger people.
In the clips they have props that also give the opinion of them being in a school. The younger people are carrying bags and things that students have in there everyday school lives. The teachers are carrying folders. I feel this shows like they are in charge as they appear more organised and in control of the younger people.

Even people who are the teachers have a different personalty and rank according to their age. There is a man who is a lot older than a woman standing next to her. He is giving her advice on protocol and what they do in a school showing that he, as the oldest, has the most respect and power out of all of them.
Language:
The younger people are using slang words throughout the clip. I think it is the stereotypical view of how teenagers speak to those older to them. The teachers aren't talking in slang, they are prouncing their words as people would think teachers would talk. This could show age as the teenagers are looking up to those older which is why the adults are talking like they are (so the teenagers have a role model to look up to). They are also using a different tone of voice, the teacher sounds like he has more control than the students do.

In this clip there are many different screen types:
  • Long shot: when some students are walking through the corridor it shows the school setting, I feel this also represents what they are saying. They are talking about family problems which many teenagers face and to show that they are in the school setting could represent this.
  • Close up: to show emotion on the persons face. I feel that it is a repsentaion of age as there are many scenes where the emotions on the students faces are clear and an adult may not have that expression on their face if they were going through the same thing.
  • Over the shoulder shot: I think there are many mainly for the same reasons as why the close up shots are used but by using a over the shoulder shot it shows a little more of their body language which could give some ore cluses to the viewer about what they are feeling.

I think overall this clip usese many ways of representing gender. I think the way they have almost shown three different ages in one screen to show the differences between them is very good. It follows the stereotypical views of the relationship between the young and the old and teacher and student. Due to the language, screen types, clothing and background I think the setting and relationship between character are very clear to the audience.

Represantion of gender homework

Evaluation
Mise-en-scene:

  • In the clip men have wepons, for example the soliders have guns and the master has a laser screwdriver, Mather has nothing showing that they have power over her.

  • In the clip there is also a ticking clock building suspence and to help with this there is a lot of zeros infrount of the numbers, this shows that time is running and as the master has control over this therefore over everyone.
  • You see Mather talking to everyone together when the master just fights back with weapons. This shows the stereotypical view of men and women when in a fighting situation.
  • The clip also shows the master talking to the rockets and the Tolckaphain (the aliens), there are lots of them showing just how powerful they are.

  • When there is a reply from the rockets it is a male voice showing that men have the power of powerful weapons.
  • When Mather walks in the master walks down a couple of steps, this could represent his downfall staring as she steps through the door as her plan is falling into place. When he realises he sits down as she stand up showing that there is a shift in power.
  • In the background there are women wearing maid outfits and the men look like soldiers, this is also the stereotypical view of jobs that men and women should have.

Editing:

  • As the storyline speeds up so does the shots.
  • When Mather is talking to people about The doctor the screen goes white, it shows that she is explaining her plan though, the master just goes to violence showing the difference in gender and how the cope to sort problems out. It also represents flashbacks.

Sound:

  • As Mather walks in the music makes the audience think that Mather is defeated, it sounds like a victory song for the master.
  • As Mather kneels down and obeys the masters commands the music slows down and sounds almost sad, this may give the impression to the viewer that everything is bout to end as Mather has lost.
  • When Mather begins to laugh the music gets a bit faster, this could show the shift of power.
  • It continues to gain pace as she tells her story of how she has overthrown the master. There is also a ticking sound to build up suspense.

Camera work:

  • As Mather kneels down the camera goes down with her, this is showing the audience how little power she has and how small the Master sees her.
  • When the master walks down some of the stairs and also when he sits down, the camera also goes down, I think this gives the same effect as it did with Mather.
  • When she stands up again the camera goes up as well showing the shift in power.
  • There is a close up shot when she laughs, I feel this is because it is a major moment in the scene as its the first time we see the power change. It is followed by a close up to see the masters face as the realisation of him being beaten occurs to him.
  • When Mather walks in there is a steady cam shot which singles her out and  shows how alone and vulnerable she is as she is the focus of the shot.

Regional identity homework

This advert of Greek yoghurt tells the storyline of a boy letting a cow out of the field, going to get it back again and telling his mother that he got the 'escaped' cow back so he can get the reward of yoghurt. Overall I think it is set in Greece. This is due to the old looking buildings and the town which is set in the mountains which is what I think is the stereotypical view of Greece. In the video there is also a Greece flag in the background and they are speaking a foreign language. The music in the background also sounds like Greek folk music. The clothes that they wear are very simple which could be a message showing that the yoghurt being advertised is natural and simple, this is also shown through the settings. Throughout the video is looks very old until we see some cables and at the end the mother answers a mobile which could represent that although the yoghurt is unchanged since 1926 it still fits in with modern day society. Looking at the video the life they led is a very simple one. There is a community feel and they make there own food, this is the life everyone dreams off which could also relate to the yoghurt again. We also see a man on a donkey which could also show nature and the simple life again. The fact that the little boy can go running to get the cow by himself shows that it is a very carefree life they lead. The way he acts with the cow, how he gets the cow out of the field and leads the cow back, shows they have close relationship which could show that the boy spends a lot of time out in the fields with them in nature. Overall I think that this advert has a very strong regional identity.
